AI website design: what it can and can't do

Harrowtech.ai · last checked 13 October 2026

Yes, AI can design a first draft of your website. Wix, Hostinger and Squarespace each say their builders turn a short description into a site with pages, layout and words. What still needs a person is the part that makes it true and yours: checking every fact, adding what only you know about your business, and approving it before it goes live. Google calls the fact-check “critical”.

What AI does, and what still needs a person

AI can draftPages, layout and first-draft copy, from a short description (all three builders below). Squarespace adds colour palettes, fonts and imagery. Hostinger’s tools also generate logos and write blog posts and product descriptions.
A person must checkEvery fact, because AI models “don’t retrieve facts, but predict a likely sequence of words” (Google). That includes the page titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text, not only the visible text.
A person must addYour own point of view, so the content “stays unique” (Squarespace). A builder only knows what you typed into the prompt.
A person must decideWhen it is ready to publish. Google’s advice is to review “before publishing”.

What the builders say their AI does

Wix“Create a website with AI by describing what you want.” Describe your business, goals and style “and it instantly generates a complete site structure—including relevant pages, layout and on-brand copy.” You then refine it with Aria, Wix’s built-in AI, or by drag and drop. Wix says you can start for free.
HostingerTwo modes. In Manual mode you “describe your website in a single prompt, get a ready-made site instantly, and fine-tune it visually from there.” Agentic mode, which Hostinger also calls vibe coding, builds and edits the site through a chat with AI. Its built-in tools “generate logos, write blog posts, create product descriptions, and optimize for SEO”.
SquarespaceIts Blueprint AI builder “can instantly create a personalized, multi-page website starting point, complete with copy and imagery already in place.” Of its AI writer it says: “You can use the generated text as a starting point for your own copy.”

All three describe a next step after the AI draft: Squarespace calls its result a “starting point”, Hostinger says to “fine-tune it”, and Wix talks about “refining it”. For what each builder charges, see website design tools and apps compared.

Why AI-written pages need a human check

Google’s guidance on generative AI content (last updated 1 October 2026) does not rule out AI content. It says generative AI “can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content.” Four points in it matter for a small business site:

Squarespace’s own guide makes the same point from the seller’s side: “Unhelpful or unengaging content underperforms with readers and in search results.”

A review list for an AI-drafted site

Google’s points turn into a short list. Go through it page by page before the site goes live:

Selling online adds rules of its own. Google says Merchant Center requires AI-generated product images to carry IPTC “TrainedAlgorithmicMedia” metadata, and AI-generated product titles and descriptions to be “labeled as AI-generated”. The legal details every UK business site must show are in our website launch checklist.

How we use AI in website work

One place we use AI is after a site has launched: making changes. Christina Hutchings, a counsellor whose website we built, described it in her review on our home page (15 May 2026):

“All I have to do is email the agent with any changes and before you know it the changes have been staged pending approval. Once approved the agent makes it go live automatically!!” Christina Hutchings, Director, christinahutchings.uk

The order matters. The agent prepares the change, the owner sees it and approves it, and only then is it published. That is the same rule Google sets for AI content: a person reviews it before it goes live.

Our websites start from £950 for a redesign of an existing five-page site and £2,500 for a new five-page site. A five-page site is live within a working week from the day we have your content or access to your old site. You get the keys and there is no monthly fee. Prices and what affects them are on what a website costs in the UK, and how we compare with a freelancer or agency is on choosing a website design company.
